Privacy Policy

WhenNew is a local-first Chrome extension that adds historical MSRP and depreciation context beside used-vehicle listings. This policy explains what WhenNew handles and what it does not do.

WhenNew processes vehicle details, listing prices, VINs when present, and page structure locally in your browser. It does not send that information to WhenNew or to a third-party vehicle service.

WhenNew may temporarily process the following information on a page you visit:

• Vehicle details such as model year, make, model, trim, drivetrain, and configuration evidence.
• Listing prices and price context used to calculate depreciation, retained value, or an amount above MSRP.
• VINs when present in the page, along with page structure needed to place the WhenNew indicator beside a listing title.
• Bundled MSRP, coverage, and U.S. CPI-U data installed with the extension.

WhenNew makes no analytics, advertising, VIN-decoding, pricing, MSRP, or AI API requests. Its service worker reads only files installed with the extension, and those data files are not exposed as web-accessible resources.

WhenNew does not collect browsing history, sell personal information, create a user profile, or transmit page content, vehicle details, prices, or VINs to a server.

Chrome local storage holds display preferences, including the selected buying-power comparison year, and your paused-site list. Manual configuration corrections last for the current page session and are not synchronized.

If you turn on the optional missing-price list, WhenNew stores up to 100 year/make/model entries with encounter counts. The list contains no VINs, listing URLs, asking prices, or timestamps. It is never sent anywhere automatically, and you can export or clear it in Settings.

Session-only frame identifiers may be retained so the toolbar can combine results from embedded inventories after the service worker sleeps. They are removed when the tab closes and do not retain browsing URLs or vehicle details.

WhenNew runs on HTTP and HTTPS pages, including embedded frames, because automatic inline display on dealer sites is its core function. The storage permission supports preferences and session-only frame identifiers. The contextMenus permission supports an explicit command for comparing highlighted U.S.-dollar text with a year selected in Settings.

When you choose that context-menu command, the selected amount is processed locally and is not stored or transmitted. WhenNew does not scan ordinary pages for general prices or load CPI data until you use the command.

You can disable WhenNew for the current site, pause sites in Settings, change display preferences, correct a detected vehicle for the current session, export or clear the missing-price list, or uninstall the extension. Uninstalling removes Chrome-managed extension storage.

If WhenNew’s data handling, permissions, retention, or network behavior changes, this policy will be updated before or when the change takes effect. For privacy questions, use the support contact on this site and mention WhenNew.
