Chef.AI - Ingredient Scanner
Privacy Policy
Effective date: July 10, 2026
Overview
This Privacy Policy explains how Chef.AI ("the app," "we," "us," or "our") collects, uses, and shares information when you use the app, and the choices you have. Chef.AI is an AI-powered ingredient scanner and recipe assistant made by Nana Annor Asante.
Chef.AI does not create a developer account, run advertising SDKs, or use your information for cross-app tracking. It does process information you choose to provide so it can identify food, generate recipes and meal plans, analyze nutrition, and deliver the other features described below.
Information We Collect and Process
Depending on how you use Chef.AI, the app may handle the following:
- Photos — ingredient, package, label, or finished-meal images you select or capture for identification, recipe generation, or nutrition analysis.
- Cooking inputs — confirmed ingredients, dietary profile, allergies, preferences, appliances, requested changes, and other text needed to generate or edit results.
- Optional nutrition targets — if you enable macro-aware recipes and grant Health access, the app reads today's calories, protein, carbohydrates, and fat on device and sends only the calculated remaining targets with the generation request.
- Purchase and credit information — verified StoreKit transactions and a generation-credit ledger. The remaining ledger may sync through your private iCloud key-value store.
- Locally saved content — recipes, meal analyses, favorites, ratings, notes, tags, settings, and thumbnails stored on your device. Saved recipes may also be indexed by Apple Spotlight on that device.
- Support messages — anything you choose to send when you contact support.
Ingredient Photos and AI Processing
Before an ingredient or meal image is uploaded, Apple's Vision framework performs OCR and barcode detection on device. Detected retail barcodes may be sent to the Open Food Facts API to retrieve a product name, brand, and package quantity.
Compressed copies of the selected images, text detected from labels, confirmed ingredients, and relevant cooking inputs are sent through Chef.AI's secure proxy to an OpenAI-compatible service to provide identification, recipe, meal-plan, image-generation, editing, and nutrition features. Chef.AI does not intentionally retain the submitted source photos on its own server after the request is relayed, but service providers process request data under their own terms and retention practices.
Accounts and Local Storage
Chef.AI does not require a developer account or Sign in with Apple. Recipes, meal records, preferences, and related content are stored locally using Apple's on-device frameworks. Deleting a saved item removes it from the app's local library; deleting the app removes its local data, subject to normal device backups managed by Apple.
In-App Purchases
Chef.AI offers consumable credit packs through Apple's in-app purchase system. Credits are granted after a transaction is verified and do not expire. Apple processes payment details; Chef.AI does not receive or store your payment card information. A remaining credit ledger may sync across your Apple devices through iCloud when available.
Apple Health
With your permission, Chef.AI can write nutrition values from a meal analysis to Apple Health. If you separately enable macro-aware recipes, it can read today's calories, protein, carbohydrates, and fat to calculate what remains against your goals.
Health data is accessed on device through HealthKit. Raw Health records are not uploaded; only calculated remaining targets may be included in an AI generation request. You can revoke Health access at any time in Settings or the Health app.
How We Use Information
Information is used to provide the app's features and to support you, including:
- Identifying ingredients from your photos and generating recipe suggestions.
- Generating and editing recipes, meal plans, dish images, and nutrition estimates.
- Saving your library and preferences locally, and indexing saved recipes in Spotlight.
- Delivering purchases and syncing the credit ledger through Apple services.
- Recording meals to Apple Health when you choose to.
- Responding to your support requests.
How We Share Information
We do not sell your personal information. Chef.AI relies on a small number of service providers to deliver its features:
- OpenAI-compatible AI services — to identify food and provide requested generation, editing, visualization, and nutrition features.
- Open Food Facts — to resolve retail barcodes detected in ingredient photos.
- Apple — for App Store purchases, private iCloud credit-ledger sync, HealthKit, notifications, Reminders export, and Spotlight integration when you use those features.
Data Retention
Chef.AI does not intentionally retain submitted source photos on its own server after relaying a request. Recipes, meal records, preferences, and thumbnails remain on your device until you delete them or the app. The credit ledger may remain in your private iCloud key-value store. Apple, OpenAI-compatible providers, Open Food Facts, and any services you choose to export to apply their own retention practices.
Health and Nutrition Disclaimer
Recipe, nutrition, and meal information in Chef.AI is provided for general and culinary purposes and is not medical, dietary, or professional advice. Always review recipes for your own needs — including allergies, dietary restrictions, and equipment — and consult a qualified professional when appropriate.
Security
Information sent to AI and platform providers is transmitted over secure connections. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, but we and our service providers take reasonable measures to protect the information involved in providing the app's features.
Your Choices
You have control over the information Chef.AI uses:
- Grant or revoke camera, photo, and Apple Health permissions at any time in your device settings.
- Choose not to upload images, which limits recipe generation.
- Delete individual recipes and meal records in the app, or delete the app to remove its local store.
- Turn off macro-aware recipes and revoke Health, camera, photo, notification, or Reminders permissions in system settings.
- Manage purchases through your Apple account.
- Contact support with any questions about your information.
Children's Privacy
Chef.AI is rated 4+ but is intended for general audiences and is not directed to children under 13. Please do not submit images of or information about children.
Apple and the App Store
